Students from the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) took a break from classes and other tasks to refresh and recharge at the CHHS Mental Health Awareness Social held Oct. 17 in Wirtz Hall Atrium. More than 50 Huskies gathered for the afternoon event that was sponsored by the CHHS Academic Advising team.
“The social was a remarkable success,” said CHHS advisor, Angelica Flores, who took the lead coordinating the event. “Events like this play a crucial role in promoting mental health awareness and showcasing resources on campus that support student success and wellbeing,”
Student Brianna Flores shared the sentiment.
“I feel like (events like this) are important because it is so easy to overwork yourself and that can lead to burnout,” Flores said. “Participating in mental health activities can help you think about other things that calm your mind instead of stressing.”
Members of the NIU Couple and Family Therapy Clinic, the Northeast Illinois Area Health and Education Center (AHEC) and TRIO Student Support Services were all in attendance and contributed to the vibrant atmosphere. Students enjoyed a variety of stress relief activities such as rock painting, coloring and creating affirmations, and the highlight of the day was a special visit from Henry, our therapy dog in training.
“I loved that everyone who was there was friendly and took their time to explain their organization,” said student Crystal Ayala. “Being in college is hard. Knowing that support is available and where to find it is important.”
