Center of Excellence

Northern Illinois University’s rehabilitation counseling graduate degree program was recently named as a Center of Excellence by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC), making it the first university program in the nation to receive this designation.

Amanda McCarthy

“Achieving the CRCC Centers of Excellence designation showcases our commitment to delivering top-notch education for future rehabilitation counselors, boosts our reputation as a program, and offers students and faculty new professional development and networking opportunities,” said Amanda McCarthy, NIU professor of rehabilitation counseling. “We hope this designation increases visibility for our program, allowing us to train more rehabilitation counselors to meet the growing demand. “

The CRCC Centers of Excellence designation was created to attract students to premier programs, improve outcomes for students sitting for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) exam, and most importantly, provide high-quality client-centered services for individuals with disabilities. Recognized centers collaborate with the CRCC on key drivers of student success which include curriculum review and development, student engagement and recruitment, CRC exam preparation and test score improvement and cultivating prepared and qualified professionals.

“Under Dr. McCarthy’s leadership, everyone worked diligently to achieve this important designation,” said Shondra Clay, interim chair, School of Interdisciplinary Health Professions. “This is a remarkable testament to our team and program.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four Americans live with a disability. Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC) represent the most qualified experts to help individuals with disabilities identify strengths and maximize abilities, cultivate successful, long-term careers, and participate fully in all aspects of their lives.

“Gaining the excellence designation involved a collaboration with CRCC to ensure our program aligned with the required curriculum and had a strong focus on preparing students successfully for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) exam,” McCarthy said. “This designation recognizes programs like ours that are doing exemplary work.”

For example, NIU has been using the CRC examination as their program comprehensive examination for many years, McCarthy said, and faculty encourage students to obtain the CRC credential to display their professional competence as well as enhance their career mobility for years to come.

“Students leave our program equipped with the knowledge, skills and dispositions to provide individualized support to help individuals overcome barriers with employment, education and daily living,” McCarthy said. “Their work helps improve client’s mental health, self-esteem and overall quality of life. Disability is an open group that anyone can join at any time. It’s important that quality rehabilitation counselors are available when needed.”
