This fall, NIU’s Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program will be buzzing with excitement — and not just because of the start of a new academic year. The program is welcoming its largest incoming class in a decade, and that growth says something powerful about the momentum behind this small but mighty program.
“I am thrilled to welcome such a large and diverse group of students,” said Diane ScheckLong, clinical assistant professor of audiology. “Our program requires a lot of group activities not only in the classroom and clinic, but also in university and community outreach events. Having a larger class will make all that collaborative work so much easier and so much more fun!”
That enthusiasm isn’t limited to faculty. Current students are already looking forward to having more peers in the hallways, more hands to help with events, and more voices in discussions and group projects. It’s a sign of a vibrant, growing program—and a reminder of how much audiology impacts not just individuals, but entire communities.
A Program Rooted in Excellence and Experience
The Doctor of Audiology program at NIU is fully accredited and completed in just three years, making it a fast-paced, immersive experience for aspiring audiologists. Students benefit from personalized mentorship with expert faculty and clinical staff who are passionate about patient care and developing future professionals.

“I was really drawn to an accelerated program,” said student Julia Braasch. “Audiology is the study of hearing and balance, but I think that there is so much more that goes into audiology than that. My professors go above and beyond to make sure I am getting the experience that I need to be successful.”
One of the cornerstones of the program is its on-campus clinic, which offers a full range of services to patients from the university and surrounding community. Students work hands-on from the very beginning, conducting diagnostic hearing and vestibular evaluations, fitting hearing aids and cochlear implants, treating tinnitus and hyperacusis, and more.
“Our clinic is one of our greatest assets,” added Professor ScheckLong. “And our students often tell us how much they value the tight-knit community they find here. They’re not just gaining skills—they’re forming relationships with faculty who care deeply about their success.”
An audiology degree isn’t just a path to a profession. It’s an opportunity to grow—personally and professionally—while making a lasting impact in the community. Whether students come to the program with a background in science, communication, or education, they leave as skilled, compassionate clinicians ready to help people reconnect with the world around them.
“Audiology is a profession that changes lives,” said Professor ScheckLong. “That’s why I feel so passionate about training the next generation. Watching students bring their own ambition, compassion, and ideas into this work makes every day in this program meaningful.”
“Our cohorts here are like family,” Julia said.
