Donor spotlight: Linda J. Deering

Linda J. Deering knows the power of a great education — and what it can lead to. After earning her bachelor’s in nursing in 1987 and her master’s degree in nursing in 1992, Deering turned her NIU education into a springboard for an exceptional career in health care leadership.

A former hospital president and CEO, Deering built a reputation as a visionary, patient-centered leader. Her tenure in executive roles was marked by a focus on clinical excellence,
empowering teams and improving health care delivery — all while breaking barriers for
women in leadership. Now a respected motivational speaker, she shares her experience to
guide others toward success and service.

But Deering’s influence extends beyond the boardroom. A proud and passionate alumna, she continues to give back to NIU through philanthropy and advocacy.

“I give to NIU because I believe in the leadership, faculty and value of education offered,” Deering says. “I believe that we have a jewel in the western communities of Chicago,
which provides something for everyone.”

Deering has served on the NIU Foundation Board and various university task teams for several years, witnessing the evolution of leadership and strategy firsthand. She is currently a member of the CHHS Advisory Board.

“I have seen changes in leadership and administration, yet believe that Dr. Freeman, Dean Fiala and others continue to bring us to the future in an effective way for our community and students,” she shares. “NIU continues to get better, making a positive difference for students, employees and our communities. I will continue to support NIU so that this opportunity is available for all students for decades to come.”
