Duffrin earns Presidential Engagement and Partnership Professorship

Melani Duffrin’s impact as an educator extends far beyond the four walls of her classroom and the boundaries of NIU’s campus.

For more than two decades, she has changed the way students of all ages learn about mathematics and science, and has inspired educators, future dietitians and researchers through her efforts with FoodMaster initiative.

A professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Health Professions and registered dietitian, Duffrin was honored with a 2025 NIU Presidential Engagement and Partnership Professorship, a prestigious award given to NIU professors with outstanding records of community engagement.

Nominators lauded Duffrin for her efforts to engage students, adding that “her work inspires students to apply knowledge in ways that directly benefit external audiences, fosters a sense of civic responsibility and prepares students for impactful careers.” In turn, Duffrin is heralded for providing opportunity for all students to join her research team, guiding students in professional development and affording students a safe environment to gain work experience.
