Leading the Way: Caitlin Field Becomes NIU Army ROTC’s 700th Officer

On Sept. 5, 2025, Northern Illinois University Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadet Caitlin Field achieved a remarkable milestone when she was commissioned as a second lieutenant and became the 700th officer to graduate from the NIU Army ROTC program.

Field, who recently completed all commissioning requirements over the summer, is joining the Illinois National Guard as a military police officer while also beginning her career as an elementary school physical education teacher. Her dual roles reflect the NIU Army ROTC mission: developing leaders who serve with dedication both in uniform and in their communities.

The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is a college-based leadership development program that prepares students to become officers in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard. For more than half a century, NIU Army ROTC has trained future leaders like Field who go on to serve the nation and make an impact across diverse fields.

“Commissioning the 700th Second Lieutenant from Northern Illinois University Army ROTC program is a testament to the lengthy history and success of our program,” said Lt. Col. Harold Larsen, chair of NIU Department of Military Science.  “For 56 years, officers from our program have gone on to do amazing things for our nation, and I have no doubt that Caitlin will follow in their footsteps. This accomplishment would not be possible without the amazing support we receive from university leaders, faculty and staff.”

Field’s accomplishment represents more than just a personal achievement. It’s a celebration of the strength, tradition and community behind NIU Army ROTC. Each graduate carries forward a legacy of service, leadership and excellence that continues to shape both the military and civilian world.
