It’s a golden year for Jeanne Isabel

Jeanne Isabel arrived in DeKalb in 1969 with a dream of working in health care. Fifty years later, the proud NIU alum and chair of the School of Health Studies is excited to reunite with classmates at NIU’s  116th Homecoming Golden Huskie reunion.

“I am looking forward to celebrating with classmates and folks I have not seen in many years,” Isabel said. “We can celebrate where we were 50 years ago and where we are today. In my case it looks like that is not very far, but it is all the in between years that are rich with adventures.”

A favorite NIU memory for Isabel was seeing Gloria Steinem speak in the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the early 1970s.

“We couldn’t wait to see her because she was an innovator and a powerful, strong woman,” Isabel said. “It was really something to see at that time.”

After graduating from NIU in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, Isabel joined the Peace Corps. She said the experience ignited a passion for world travel that she’s enjoyed throughout her career.

“From then on, I would get the itch to embark on a new travel adventure,” Isabel said. “My experiences and expertise led me to wonderful consulting opportunities all over the world. I love teaching medical technology procedures to young people in other lands.”

She went on to earn a master’s degree and doctoral degree from NIU. Combining her love of teaching and passion for travel, Isabel started a study abroad program to Belize where she travels with Huskies to observe how health care is delivered overseas.

“I am proud of my education, the people I have worked with, and all the encouragement and support I have received through the years,” Isabel said.

Over the course of her three-decade career at NIU, she’s been an instructor, professor, mentor and is currently the chair of the School of Health Studies. Dean Kelly Fiala said the College of Health and Human Sciences is fortunate to have Isabel on the team.

“Jeanne cares so deeply about the students, faculty, and staff and is someone I have quickly come to rely on,” Fiala said. “She is a Golden Huskie in every sense.”

Isabel said she is fortunate to be a Huskie.

“NIU has so much to offer, and the network of friends and colleagues I have made are priceless,” Isabel said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with folks and work with so many outstanding students.”

Isabel’s advice to NIU students is simple: take advantage of the many opportunities that are here for you.

“Welcome opportunities, never underestimate your abilities, have faith and don’t be afraid of new experiences,” Isabel said.

When she isn’t working, the mom of Chris, 37, and Marc, 33, enjoys volunteering, serving on various boards and of course, taking in a Huskie football game as a season ticket holder.
