Nursing students spread cheer in the community

The holidays were a little brighter for area residents over the holidays thanks to NIU School of Nursing. More than 30 Huskies joined together for the Blanket, Cards, and Cookies event held at the Wellness and Literacy Center and sponsored by the Student Nurses Organization (SNO).

“I was so ecstatic about the turnout and how many people came to volunteer and have a good time,” said Sara Taylor, nursing student and SNO president. “You could feel the pure joy and excitement in the room with everyone either tying the blankets or making a Christmas card.”

Taylor said the SNO event was open to all students, and many brought friends and family members to participate. The efforts resulted in 28 blankets that were donated to local cancer centers and more than 100 Christmas cards delivered to local community centers.

Lucian Brink, a College of Business student, said he appreciated the opportunity to get involved and support the organization’s efforts.

“I have always found purpose in the idea of businesses and organizations that are community-driven and socially mindful,” Brink said. “I was honored to meet this group of people (who were) so totally devoted to the people they care for. Helping people isn’t just a part of their job; it is a part of who they are.”

Taylor wasn’t surprised by Brink’s reaction.

“The nursing program here at NIU is one that really challenges students, yet poses such a welcoming culture,” Taylor said. “It really fosters lasting and meaningful relationships in addition to academic excellence. I am very happy with my choice of NIU nursing and would choose it time and time again. This program is home for me.”
