New director named for Northeast Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC)

Deyci Ramirez joins the College of Health and Human Sciences as the director of the Northeast Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC). While new to the position, she takes on the role with over 14 years of NIU experience and a strong track record as a student advocate and leader.

“I believe in the power of education to transform lives, and I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students,” Ramirez said. “I look forward to working closely with the AHEC team, students and community partners to advance our mission and make a lasting impact. I am eager to bring my passion, experience, and dedication to this position and contribute to the success of AHEC and its students.”

The Northeast Illinois AHEC program is designed to support underrepresented health care students who want to practice in underserved rural and urban areas in the northeast Illinois region. NIU joined the (AHEC) network in 2023 and serves the counties of DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Will, as well as the Cook County townships of Barrington, Berwyn, Cicero, Elk Grove, Evanston, Hanover, Leyden, Lyons, Maine, New Trier, Niles, Northfield, Norwood Park, Oak Park, Palatine, Proviso, River Forest, Riverside, Schaumburg, Stickney and Wheeling.

Ramirez understands the students she serves and has the experience to take AHEC to the next level.

“I am confident that my educational, personal, professional and community experiences uniquely position me to lead AHEC,” Ramirez said. “My role as the bilingual/bicultural counselor for the NIU CHANCE program has provided me with insights into the challenges faced by underrepresented students and the importance of providing culturally responsive support.”

Ramirez has a master’s degree from NIU and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree. Additionally, her leadership experience as president of the Board of Education for District 428 in DeKalb has provided her with a deep understanding of the educational landscape and the ability to navigate complex systems.

“Deyci quickly acclimated to the AHEC director position and is an exceptional asset to our team,” said Sherrill Morris, CHHS associate dean for academic affairs. “She has streamlined our processes and is using her connections in the northern Illinois region to expand the program’s reach. Students in the AHEC Scholars program are already benefiting from Deyci’s leadership.”

Ramirez said she is looking forward to expanding AHEC’s reach and creating innovative programs that align with the needs of the community.

“Through AHEC, I want students to develop critical skills such as cultural competence, leadership, and community engagement,” Ramirez said.  “I also hope they build a network of mentors and peers who can support them throughout their academic and professional journeys so they leave the program with a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.”
