Cadet Honored for Outstanding Campus Contributions

Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Cadet Jaime Hernandez was recently recognized with the 2025 Vice President’s Student Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to student life and leadership during his four years at Northern Illinois University. The award honors students who have made a meaningful and lasting impact on the NIU community through their service, involvement, and leadership both inside and outside the classroom.

“Throughout his time at NIU, Hernandez has taken on meaningful leadership roles across campus,” said LTC Harold Larsen, chair of the Department of Military Science at NIU. “As a cadet in the Army ROTC program, he has exemplified discipline, commitment, and servant leadership.”

Outside of ROTC, Hernandez has been an active and engaged member of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon,  where he supported chapter operations and mentored younger members. He also played a key role in the Campus Activities Board, helping to organize events that brought students together and fostered school spirit. Hernandez is also a member of the Illinois Army National Guard and has deployed to Africa.

“From mentoring peers to shaping campus programming, Hernandez has consistently worked to make the university a more connected and inclusive space,” Larsen said. “His leadership has been marked by quiet confidence, humility, and a genuine drive to support those around him.”

Hernandez graduated in May and is currently a Quartermaster Platoon Leader in the Illinois Army National Guard at North Riverside, IL.
