The Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center resembled a grocery store staging area as College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) faculty and staff arrived for their Jan. 9 Welcome Back meeting. Along with welcoming new employees and reflecting on a successful fall semester, college leaders used the gathering to support students through a hands-on service effort benefiting the Huskie Food Pantry.
“The generosity shown during this food drive truly reflects the best of our Huskie spirit,” said Dean Kelly Fiala. “Our faculty and staff stepped up with compassion and care for our students, making this a meaningful way to begin the new year. Starting our first week back by giving to others reminds us that at our core, we are a community that looks out for one another.”
Diane ScheckLong, clinical assistant professor of audiology, shared the sentiment.
“In these times of economic uncertainty, I was happy to help stock the pantry as no one can learn without proper nutrition,” ScheckLong said. “Students should not have to think about food insecurity when trying to study and learn.”
For the past nine years, NIU Huskie Food pantry has provided students with nutritious groceries so they can focus on their education, not on where they’re getting their next meal. Located in the Chick Evans Field House, the pantry provides a welcoming and inclusive environment where students can access resources and learn about healthy food choices.
To do this, the pantry relies on the support of individuals and organizations.
“The Huskie Food Pantry greatly appreciates the spirit of giving and partnership from our campus community,” said Jeff Salmon, director for NIU Center for Student Assistance. “Anyone interested in conducting a food drive or volunteering at the pantry this semester can register on our website. All are welcome as together as Huskies we make such a tremendous impact on the lives of our students.”
