NIU Doctor of Physical Therapy students Daniel Werner and Kate Heinricher, along with NIU D.P.T. instructor Brynn Nahlik, met with Illinois state Rep. Robert Pritchard recently. They were advocating for support of HB4643 which would provide direct access to physical therapy, eliminating the need for people to receive a referral from a physician or other health care provider to receive physical therapy services. . Illinois is one of the few states in which physical therapists are not legally allowed to provide treatment without a referral leading to delays in care, barriers to health care access and increase in health care costs. Werner and Heinricher shared a number of papers supporting the positive effects of direct access on cost, outcomes and patient satisfaction with Rep. Pritchard.
