Patricia Tattersall, associate professor of speech-language pathology, has been named a Champion of Empathy by The Changing Children’s Foundation.
The Geneva, Illinois-based organization strives to strengthen the capacity of parents, caregivers and communities to care for children’s help and well-being while promoting peaceful families and thriving communities.
Tattersall brought the organization’s International Child/Parenting Development program to the Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary School in DeKalb. The program’s goal is to help parents and caregivers have more positive communications with their children, especially in difficulty times. Through weekly learning groups, the program aims to reduce the incidence of intrafamily violence, maltreatment and neglect.
The DeKalb program also includes NIU Speech-Language Pathology graduate students and Communicative Disorders undergraduate students as well as the Allied Health and Communicative Disorders Chair Sherrill Morris.
