Recent nursing school grad nominated for 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year

Recent alumna Mikayla Voigt of the Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team was named as a nominee for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year on Wednesday.

Voigt earned Second Team All Mid-American Conference honors this past season after leading NIU in scoring with 19.5 points per game and 98 three-pointers made which are second-most in a single season in program history. On Dec. 8, Voigt set NIU and MAC single-game records with 52 points and 11 three-pointers in the Huskies’ win over Western Illinois. She finished her career fifth on the NIU scoring chart with 1,741 points.

On March 11, Voigt became the third Academic All-American in NIU women’s basketball history when she was named to the Second Team of the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Women’s Basketball Team. She also was named to the Academic All-MAC team for the third time and earned her third MAC Distinguished Scholar honor.

A record 585 female college athletes were nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year award this year. Two hundred sixty-two of the nominees are from Division I and eighty-seven of the nominees played basketball. The Top 30 nominees will be celebrated and the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual award ceremony in Indianapolis on Oct. 20.
