Meet Gabrielle Sims, a Human Development and Family Sciences major with aspirations to attend law school.
Hometown: Racine, WI
Are you attending NIU on any scholarships?
Northern Academic Scholarship.
What is your major, and why did you choose your field of study?
My major is Human Development and Family Sciences with an emphasis in Family Social Services and minor in Spanish. I chose this major because I have a desire to help families. I plan on attending law school after I graduate from NIU and practice as a family and immigration attorney.
How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
Growing up, I always heard a lot about NIU. Many of my family members and people I attend church with have received a degree from NIU. At first, my intention was to not follow the crowd, but to branch out and go to a different university. However, after digging a little deeper, I found that NIU had everything I wanted. It was important to me that my school of choice have my major and minor, but it was also important that I could still be close to my family. NIU is close to home and more affordable than other universities I was considering. Once I began my education here, I understood why so many people before me made the decision to come here.
What do you like about campus and the DeKalb area?
The thing I like the most about the DeKalb area is the people. Everyone I have met here has been exceptionally sweet and caring. It has a small-town feel, but with many resources and opportunities to get involved and broaden your horizons.
What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
NIU is a very accepting and welcoming place of people from all backgrounds. I believe this is what makes us all unique and NIU creates the perfect environment for people to be themselves and explore their own strengths. I will be able to take with me my ability to be kind to everyone and work with all people.
