Huskies become newly commissioned officers

Ten cadets were commissioned as officers in the United States Army during the 2021 Commissioning Ceremony for Northern Illinois University ROTC on May 7, 2021.

Ten cadets were commissioned as officers in the United States Army during the 2021 Commissioning Ceremony for Northern Illinois University Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) on May 7.

“It is my pleasure to have served with these excellent students, cadets, and now newly commissioned officers in the U.S. Army,” said Lt. Col. Andrew Spring, chair of NIU’s Department of Military Science. “This accession is a testament to their perseverance, their resilience and their grit.”

Spring said he is confident that each officer will faithfully perform their duties in service to our nation.

“I wish them all well in their continued endeavors and look forward to serving with them all in future assignments,” Spring said. “Huskies lead the way!”

Congratulations to the following officers:

Michael Atterbury of Roscoe, Illinois, earned his bachelor’s degree in History, and will be stationed at Ft. Benning in Georgia.

Devin Breske of Montgomery, Illinois, earned his bachelor’s degree in Technology with an emphasis in manufacturing engineering, and will be stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri.

Anthony Gurbal of Geneva, Illinois, earned his bachelor’s degree in Communications, and will be stationed at Ft. Lee in Virginia.

Jerry Macias of Glendale Heights, Illinois, earned his bachelor’s degree in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Administration, and will be stationed at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma.

Jessy Marasco of Elwood, Illinois, earned his bachelor’ degree in Computer Science with an emphasis in Enterprise Software, and will be stationed at Ft. Gordon in Georgia.

Abigail Newman of Oregon, Illinois, earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in English as a Second Language (ESL), and will be stationed at Ft. Lee in Virginia.

Pawel Nowak of West Dundee, Illinois, earned his bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, and will be stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri.

Artur Surman of Prospect Heights, Illinois, earned his bachelor’s degree in Operations and Information Management, and will be stationed at Ft. Gordon in Georgia.

Gillian Tubera of Skokie, Illinois, earned her bachelor’s degree in Nursing, and will be stationed at Ft. Sam Huston in Texas.

Roberto Urizar of Las Vegas, Nevada, earned a Bachelor of General Studies degree with an emphasis in Technology, and will be stationed at Ft. Lee in Virginia.
