Making the rounds

NIU Doctor of Audiology students took part in the eighth annual Clinical Rounds Poster Presentations event on Nov. 21 held at the Wellness and Literacy Center. Each year during their final on-campus fall semester, members of the cohort of audiology students choose a clinical case, read relevant research and present their findings to peers and faculty.

“Grand rounds is a longstanding tradition in healthcare education,” said Danica Billingsly, clinical associate professor of audiology and coordinator of the event. “It provides presenters opportunities to demonstrate linkage of their academic and clinical knowledge and skills and exposes audiences to rare cases and new applications of diagnostic or treatment methods.”

Billingsly said that presenting in this manner allows students to practice a presentation style that’s often used in clinical practice. It’s important, Billingsly said, because students gain valuable feedback and can hone their skills prior to beginning their externship year.

In addition, the audiology students benefited from being joined by third-year Doctor of Physical Therapy students under the leadership of Catherine Cheung, assistant professor of physical therapy.

“Having students and faculty from a peer profession present enlivened the event and deepened the experience for our students,” Billingsly said. “It helped them present their cases from a more holistic viewpoint and the questions asked helped them to recognize opportunities for teaming and shared expertise.”

Audiology student Katy Beam agreed.

“It was fantastic having our physical therapy peers join us,” Beam said.  “It’s always fun getting to interact with them and create interdisciplinary relationships. I really enjoyed presenting to them because of their curiosity.”
