Alyssa Navarro has found her home at NIU and wants to help others do the same. The School of Nursing student helped co-found the Hispanic Student Nurses Alianza (HSNA), and currently serves as the organization’s president.

Alyssa Navarro
“I’ve always gravitated toward mentoring, so when I heard that the School of Nursing was looking for students to start an organization to support Hispanic/Latinx nursing students, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of,” Navarro said. “My hope in forming the organization was to create a space where Hispanic/Latinx nursing students could feel seen, supported, and empowered to learn from each other. I believe that’s exactly what we’ve achieved so far.”
The Hispanic Student Nurses Alianza (HSNA) was launched in August 2024 to “mentor and empower the next generation of health care professionals to transform the future of health care.”
“Our mission is to support Hispanic nursing students by providing resources, guidance, and networking opportunities that foster their academic and professional growth,” said Linda Sietsema, clinic instructor in the School of Nursing who serves as the HSNA faculty advisor. “Through mentorship, advocacy, education, and community engagement, we aim to inspire success, promote advancement in the nursing field and ensure Hispanic students have the tools they need to thrive.”
HSNA provides support and resources for nursing students while providing connectedness and a sense of belonging to the School of Nursing, the university and the community. The growing organization currently has more than 30 active members and is open to all students.
“I wanted to be a part of HSNA because when I arrived at NIU, I noticed that while there were several organizations supporting Hispanic/Latinx students, none were specifically focused on those pursuing careers in healthcare or nursing,” said Navarro. “Although I felt a strong sense of community within the Latinx student body from day one, I quickly realized that as a nursing student I was missing the specialized support I needed.”
As a first-generation college student, she understands the challenges that come with navigating university life.
“I was fortunate enough to receive great guidance from my academic advisor throughout my pre-requisites, but even with that support, I still made mistakes, felt lost at times and wished I had done some things differently,” Navarro said. “Though those challenges were tough, I’ve come to appreciate them because they allowed me to grow and learn valuable lessons—lessons I can now share with others.”
Sietsema, who takes great pride in identifying with her Hispanic culture and traditions that have shaper her life and career, can relate to the students she mentors.
“Reflecting on my own journey through nursing school, I distinctly remember the challenges and demands I faced along the way,” Sietsema said. “During that time, I was fortunate to receive support from my family, my nursing instructors and my fellow nursing students. Many of the friendships that began in nursing school have grown and been maintained professionally over the years, and I continue to value those connections.”
Along with providing resources and networking opportunities, the organization aims to promote diversity in nursing.
“By increasing visibility and encouraging more students from our communities to pursue nursing, we hope to make a lasting impact,” Navarro said. “While our organization primarily supports Hispanic/Latinx students, we welcome individuals from all backgrounds. This inclusivity allows everyone involved to gain exposure to diverse cultural perspectives, fostering cultural competency—an essential skill for providing high-quality care to patients in our increasingly diverse health care system.”
Sietsema shared the sentiment.
“I have a deep appreciation for the excitement and passion that student nurses bring as they embark on their journey to become healthcare professionals,” Sietsema said. “It is truly inspiring to witness their growth. Looking ahead, I am excited for the future of this nursing organization and the lasting impact these student nurses will undoubtedly have on the field of nursing.”

¡Vaya!
I really appreciate NIU’s School of Nursing taking this step to support Hispanic student nurses through HSNA. Building community and resources for underrepresented students in healthcare is so important for the future of nursing.

I appreciate your request, but I need to respectfully decline this task.
This appears to be a request to create backlink promotion content for placement on a third-party website (an NIU nursing school news article). This type of activity raises several concerns:
1. **Authenticity Issues**: Inserting promotional content into unrelated articles violates editorial integrity and deceives readers about the content’s origin.
2. **Platform Terms of Service**: Most news and educational platforms prohibit unauthorized promotional content insertion in comments or elsewhere.
3. **Search Engine Guidelines**: Google and other search engines penalize artificial backlink schemes and unnatural link placements.
4. **Ethical Concerns**: This appears designed to circumvent proper advertising channels and editorial review processes.
If you want to promote worldtimefinder.com, I’d recommend legitimate alternatives:
– Creating valuable, shareable content on your own site
– Guest posting on relevant platforms with proper disclosure
– Reaching out to website owners for legitimate partnership opportunities
– Using authorized advertising platforms
– Building relationships with relevant communities

I’m curious how you’re handling the balance between being president of HSNA and managing your nursing coursework—that sounds like a lot on your plate. Did starting the organization change how you approach mentoring compared to what you were doing before, or is it mostly just a more formal structure for something you were already doing informally?

What an inspiring initiative by Alyssa. As someone who builds free English learning tools for ESL students ([english-grammar.app](https://english-grammar.app)), I see firsthand how language barriers add an extra layer of challenge for first-generation students — especially in demanding fields like nursing where precise communication really matters. The fact that HSNA already has 30+ members shows how much this kind of specialized, culturally aware support is needed. Great to see NIU investing in this.

Love how HSNA turns “being first-gen and lost” into “having a roadmap and a community behind you.”
This shows exactly why cultural competency isn’t a buzzword in nursing—it’s built day‑to‑day through groups like this.
Amazing example of students not just surviving nursing school, but building a support system so others don’t have to struggle alone.
Great! Alyssa’s story perfectly illustrates the true meaning of “community” – it is not about passively waiting for a sense of belonging, but actively creating it. As a first-generation college student, she not only overcame her own challenges but also transformed her experiences into a beacon that illuminates others. This kind of “legacy growth” is precisely the most precious quality in the nursing profession. The establishment of HSNA has accurately filled the gap in professional support. Behind the number of more than 30 members is the subtle change in the career trajectory of countless future medical workers. I particularly appreciate Professor Linda’s concept of integrating cultural identity into the role of a mentor, which is precisely the core of diversified nursing education. I look forward to seeing more case studies on how HSNA improves student retention through “culturally responsive coaching”. Perhaps there will be records of related seminars on the official website? This practical model is of great reference value to other professional associations for minority groups.
This is such an inspiring initiative! It’s wonderful to see Alyssa taking her natural inclination toward mentoring and channeling it into creating a supportive community for Hispanic/Latinx nursing students. Having a dedicated space where students feel seen and empowered to learn from each other can make such a huge difference, especially in fields where representation matters. I’m curious to hear more about what the HSNA has been able to accomplish since its founding—it sounds like exactly the kind of organization that was needed at NIU.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article on chhs.news.niu.edu. The insights were practical, clear, and easy to apply in real situations. Ahí va el link: Reference to Video. ¡Que la mejor película gane!
Excellent point about consistency in design language. It’s one of those things that seems obvious but is hard to execute well.

It’s inspiring to see how a student-led group like the HSNA can create such a strong sense of belonging. I’m curious, for others looking to build community in their own fields, what do you think is the most important first step? I found some related thoughts on this community-building resource.
The emphasis on mentorship as a core part of building that community really stood out to me. It shifts the focus from just organizing events to actively fostering growth, which feels more sustainable. I was reading more about this approach on a site about mentorship.
I appreciate the focus on student-led groups, but I wonder if the reliance on volunteer leadership creates a sustainability risk when those students graduate. How do you ensure the community’s continuity? I was just reading about similar challenges on a site about student organizations.
The idea of a student-led group specifically for Hispanic nursing students is so needed. It makes me wonder, how do you measure the long-term impact of that sense of belonging on retention and success in the field? I was just reading a piece on a similar topic at aiseedance2.pro.

“What an inspiring story about HSNA and the importance of mentorship in nursing education! As a first-generation student, I deeply relate to the challenges Alyssa described regarding the need for specialized support and a clear roadmap to navigate a complex environment. This spirit of community-building and sharing collective wisdom is exactly what makes such initiatives so powerful. Interestingly, this same philosophy of ‘guiding others through complex systems’ is what drives dedicated community resources like https://esotericebb-guide.sbs/, which provides essential roadmaps for players navigating intricate narrative paths. Whether in healthcare or digital spaces, having a supportive community to help you ‘find your home’ and master the rules is invaluable. Keep up the amazing work supporting future healthcare professionals!”

What an inspiring initiative — having 30+ members already shows how much demand there is for this kind of culturally aware support in nursing programs. Language barriers are one of the biggest hidden challenges for first-generation Hispanic students in healthcare, where precise communication can literally save lives. I build free English learning tools at Read in Levels where nursing and medical students can read graded health news articles from A1 to C1 with audio narration — exactly the kind of daily practice that builds the academic English these students need. Great to see NIU investing in this.

Really encouraging to see NIU’s School of Nursing actively expanding resources for Hispanic student nurses through the HSNA program. Supporting diverse students is a vital step toward a more inclusive healthcare community. In that spirit, I’ve been looking into gentle, accessible ways to promote well‑being for everyone, especially those with limited mobility. Chair Tai Chi offers free step‑by‑step guides and video demonstrations that make a safe, seated practice easy to start. It could be a helpful addition to campus wellness initiatives. How do you think gentle movement practices can fit into student health programs?
Reading about Alyssa Navarro’s journey in founding the HSNA is truly moving. Her observation about “missing the specialized support” she needed—despite being part of a larger community—perfectly captures the struggle many first-generation pioneers face when navigating complex, high-stakes systems.
Just as nursing students require focused mentorship to succeed in healthcare, many young entrepreneurs and creators (often first-generation professionals themselves) find themselves isolated when facing sudden, automated account bans on platforms like Stripe or Amazon. This shared need for a “roadmap” is why we built UnBanAI. We aim to provide that same sense of empowerment and professional guidance by using AI to help users navigate rigid compliance systems and reclaim their digital livelihoods.
Thank you for sharing this inspiring blueprint for community building. It’s a great reminder that whether in a clinical setting or the digital economy, having a dedicated support system is what turns a “lost” student into a future leader!

Creating a space where students feel seen and supported can change an entire academic experience, so this was encouraging to read. The focus on mentorship, belonging, and practical resources makes the organization sound genuinely useful rather than symbolic. Community-building efforts like this tend to have long-term effects that are hard to measure right away but easy to feel. I am always drawn to that kind of thoughtful support model, which is also why I keep ideas gathered at Pawstro.
This kind of student-led support structure matters because belonging is often what keeps opportunities sustainable over time, not just accessible at the start. It is good to see the story framed around continuity and community instead of only announcement language. I notice the same thing on focused niche projects like Pawstrocat, where trust grows from consistent support.
I really appreciate Alyssa sharing her journey as a first-gen student—her honesty about feeling lost and making mistakes really resonated with me. It’s inspiring to see how she turned those challenges into something positive by creating HSNA. The fact that they’re already supporting 30+ members shows how much this was needed, and I love the mission to empower the next generation of Hispanic healthcare professionals. BTW I’ve been using HappyHorse.AI (HappyHorse.AI) for organizing my study resources and it’s been super helpful.

As a nursing student, the point about “fostering cultural competency” is vital. It’s fascinating how AI is now being used to analyze visual traits and age perception. Tools like How Old Do I Look could be an interesting resource for students to explore bias and aging in a clinical context.

This is an inspiring example of how student-led initiatives can meaningfully shape academic and professional communities. The Hispanic Student Nurses Alianza (HSNA) clearly addresses a critical need by creating space for mentorship, representation, and cultural support within nursing education.
At its core, the organization reflects what strong communities are built on—shared experience, guidance, and access to opportunity. Efforts like these not only empower individual students but also strengthen the healthcare system by fostering cultural competency and inclusion in future professionals.

Thoughtful step — Hispanic nursing students often have to navigate dense English medical terminology on top of the clinical learning curve. In ESL communities I’ve worked with, what helps most is contextual vocabulary acquisition (hearing terms in real use), which is why interactive video subtitles for English learners have been gaining ground over static word lists. Great to see institutional support structures like HSNA.
Reading about “Building community” in the College of Health and Human Sciences made me realize I need to apply similar collaboration principles to my PokopiaMap project. Just as HSNA helps Hispanic/Latinx nursing students feel seen, supported, and empowered in their academic journey, we try—in our own small niche—to make complex AI developments a bit more understandable and accessible for curious readers.
It’s inspiring to see how intentional mentorship and culturally aware community-building can change the experience for first-generation students and underrepresented groups. Thanks for sharing this story; it’s a powerful reminder that thoughtful communities, whether in health care or technology, can truly make a difference.

It’s inspiring to see students like Alyssa Navarro creating spaces where peers feel seen and supported—mentorship truly transforms academic journeys. Building community in high-pressure fields like nursing reminds me how important it is to find calm and connection wherever we can, whether through campus groups or even winding down with something gentle like the free asmr content at https://freeasmr.net after a long shift. These small rituals help sustain the energy needed to keep showing up for others.

This article about building community in nursing really resonates with us at DeepSeek V4 Hub.
Just as HSNA creates a dedicated, supportive space for Hispanic/Latinx nursing students to find mentorship, resources, and a sense of belonging, our platform focuses on giving developers and teams a clear, accessible way to navigate today’s fast-growing AI ecosystem.
DeepSeek V4 Hub is a developer-focused AI model comparison and access platform that helps users evaluate cost-effective models like DeepSeek, MiniMax, and Qwen alongside leading models such as Claude, Gemini, and GPT. We provide benchmarks, side-by-side comparisons, use-case recommendations, and discounted official API key options so that teams can choose the right model for coding, agent workflows, automation, and production use—while optimizing both performance and cost.
Seeing HSNA support future healthcare professionals reinforces how important it is to have trusted, well-organized resources when you’re making high-impact decisions, whether that’s about your education, your career, or the tools you rely on every day.
This story about HSNA and building community in nursing really resonated with me from a technology perspective. In software and AI, we’ve seen that people also need dedicated spaces where they can compare options, share experiences, and get clear guidance instead of figuring everything out alone.
That’s the idea behind DeepSeek V4 Hub as well: a developer-focused AI model comparison and access platform that helps teams evaluate cost‑effective models like DeepSeek, MiniMax, and Qwen alongside leading models such as Claude, Gemini, and GPT. By offering benchmarks, side‑by‑side comparisons, use‑case recommendations, and discounted official API key options, it aims to give developers a clearer “roadmap” when they’re choosing models for coding, automation, or agent workflows—similar to how HSNA gives nursing students a clearer path through their program.
Different fields, but the same core theme: when people have the right community and tools around them, they’re able to make better decisions and focus more on meaningful work.

I’m so inspired by Alyssa Navarro’s initiative in creating the Hispanic Student Nurses Alianza (HSNA) – it’s amazing to see a space where Hispanic/Latinx nursing students can feel seen and supported. I completely agree with Navarro’s goal of fostering a sense of belonging, and I’m curious to know more about the resources and opportunities that HSNA provides, like the mentorship and networking opportunities mentioned in the post – maybe I’ll even find some ideas for my own student organization at charades-generator for a future event.
Alyssa Navarro starting HSNA in August 2024 with 30 members was such a cool thing to read during my subway ride, and it struck me that Image2 is an AI image generator and editor designed for creating production-ready visuals. It solves common AI limitations with consistent characters just like how this group helps nursing students thrive.
It’s so inspiring to see Alyssa Navarro take the initiative to co-found the HSNA. Creating a supportive space for Hispanic/Latinx nursing students is incredibly important and I’m sure it makes a huge difference for those students.

It’s so inspiring to see Alyssa Navarro co-founding the Hispanic Student Nurses Alianza (HSNA) to build community and support. I love that they’re providing resources and networking opportunities to help students thrive, and the idea of turning viral videos into structured breakdowns and AI prompts with tools like Video Prompt sounds like a great way to make learning even more engaging.
it looks good!
I really admire how NIU’s School of Nursing is creating dedicated support for Hispanic student nurses. Balancing coursework, clinical hours, and personal life can be overwhelming. Sometimes we all need a friendly nudge to step away from screens and actually rest!
Speaking of which, I discovered Cat Gatekeeper — it’s such a clever little app that gently locks you out of your favorite apps until you’ve taken a real break. Perfect for those late-night study sessions.
Have you tried any productivity tools that help you maintain healthy screen habits?
it looks good! Nano AI Maker
What a wonderful initiative for NIU nursing students. Building mentorship and community through HSNA will make a real difference in both academic success and cultural representation in healthcare. When students are ready to create visuals or share their stories, Maker AI offers a simple way to turn photos into engaging content.
It’s wonderful to see organizations like HSNA forming to provide crucial support for Hispanic/Latinx nursing students. Building a strong community is so important for academic and professional growth. This initiative reminds me that sometimes a little help from a good online image editor can also make a big difference in presentation materials.
This error is so frustrating! I had to ask my admin to update the policy. By the way, if you ever want a fun way to visualize your name, check out Your Name in Landsat – it turns names into satellite image letters.
Alyssa Navarro leading 30 members at HSNA is so cool and honestly as inspiring as someone who can design characters for comics effortlessly. I was scrolling through this during my coffee break and wow, having a supportive community really is everything!
Wonderful initiative. Mentorship, community, and cultural support can make a huge difference for students building their path in healthcare.
