Dean’s Award recipients announced

The College of Health and Human Sciences recently recognized outstanding undergraduate students in each academic program with Dean’s Awards. Criteria for the award included a GPA of 3.5 or better, demonstrated significant achievement and leadership in scholarship, campus and/or community activities, and professional service.

The following students were awarded a plaque and a letter of commendation:

Emily Bunton, Nursing, from Rochelle, Ill. Bunton volunteered to be the lead tutor for the Student Success Program in Nursing: “As a lead tutor, Emily has gone above and beyond, creating an entire communications and data storage system on Blackboard. This will allow us to store materials from graduating seniors,” said Linda Taylor, Director of Nursing Undergraduate Studies.

Julia Bush, Medical Laboratory Sciences, from Lisle Ill. Bush is known for her critical thinking skills and her ability to troubleshoot results. “She conducts herself in a professional manner at all times,” said Jeanne Isabel, program director for MLS. Bush is the treasurer of the MLS Club, has assisted with STEMFEST activities and was named employee of the year at her job in a NIU residence hall.

Megan Farris, Nutrition, Dietetics and Wellness, Carol Stream, Ill. Farris’ is non-traditional student with an long commute, who still finds time to be an active member of the NIU Student Dietetic Association, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and volunteering in the CATCH program. She is a research assistant, working with Health Studies Professor Ghosh Roy and his nutrition research within an interdisciplinary developmental play group.

Megan Haduch, Communicative Disorders, from Park Ridge, Ill. Haduch’s achievements include being a Northern Lights Ambassador, a student orientation coordinator, and recipient of the Kevin D. Knight Award. She had a presentation accepted for the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association conference. She has also been a Huskies Homecoming Queen.

Joanna Kline, Fashion Merchandising, from Crystal Lake, Ill.  Kline’s positive, professional presence makes her an excellent student and a peer advocate. Now president of the NIU Fashion Industries Organization, she has produced the annual spring fashion show. She has served an internship at Nordstrom in Chicago. “We are very proud to have her in our program,” said Sarah Cosbey, associate professor, fashion merchandising.

Megan Malone, Rehabilitation Services, from Dixon, Ill. Malone has gathered experience serving an internship at Association for Individual Development, as a personal assistant with the Illinois Division of Rehabilitation Services, and in chair positions in the Delta Zeta Sorority.

Leigha Pastorik, Family and Child Studies, from Ottawa, Ill. Pastorik has a 4.0 GPA and is vice president for the Northern Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children Student Satellite. Under her leadership the group raised money to assist DeKalb/Sycamore area children in need.

Jarin Tasnim, Public Health, from Chicago. Tasnim is completing her practicum at refugeeOne in Chicago as a medical case manager intern and recently completed a summer internship in India delivering health promotion campaigns for women’s reproductive rights and education. “Jarin represents the best of our public health students with both her excellence in the classroom and her global approach to public health,” said Becky Pritchard, practicum advisor, public health.

Sarah Wais, Hospitality and Tourism Management, from Winfield, Ill. Wais is an honor student with excellent writing ability and analytical skills, said Lan Li, professor of hospitality. “I would rank her in the top 2 percent of students I have taught in the past 10 years,” Li said.
