Huskie Spotlight shines on nursing student Guzette Espinal

Huskie Spotlight Guzette Espinal

Hometown: Aurora, IL

Year: Expected graduation: May 2023

Major: Nursing

What is your major, and why did you choose your field of study?
My intended major is nursing. I chose this field of study because I grew up taking care of my sisters since I am the oldest. I also experienced an impacting moment when a nurse took care of me when I wasn’t at my best health-wise. I want to be able to help others who are in need, especially children and newborns, the way I was helped.

How did you learn about NIU, and why did you choose to attend?
I had family who enrolled and graduated from NIU. I chose to attend this university because of the culture and environment, and it was best for me financially.

Do you have any favorite activities or events at NIU? What else do you do for fun in your spare time?
My favorite activities and events here at NIU are usually the de-stressing events that take place at the end of the semester. It’s quite nice to have a distraction during finals. I like to go shopping, take a simple walk around campus and go to the Rec Center.

What do you like about campus and the DeKalb area?
The campus and DeKalb area are very peaceful, and I really enjoy that.

What has your experience inside the classroom been like at NIU?
My experience inside the classroom at NIU has been great. From big lecture halls to small classrooms, the environment and atmosphere fit with the learning environment NIU wants to provide for the students. Professors are quite understanding and helpful, and you get to meet a lot of people in class.

What is something you have experienced at NIU that you will be able to take with you into future endeavors in your field?
Something I experienced at NIU is being a part of an organization where I learned how to lead others, and be open-minded and learn a little bit more of different points of views of people. I had the opportunity to be a part of different events such as the Women’s Empowerment Conference and learned about different women’s successes.

What is up next for you after your time at NIU? Any plans you would like to share?
After NIU I hope to be able to work as a registered nurse, or even go into the military. I’m still not quite sure what exactly I want to do, but I have some ideas in mind. I do for sure know that I want to continue my education, whether it’s at NIU or somewhere else.

Would you recommend NIU to others and why? What’s a general piece of advice you’d give to someone starting college?
I would recommend NIU to others because of the environment, and the other fellow Huskies that are here. There are so many opportunities that NIU promotes and various organizations that one can be a part of. A general piece of advice I’d give to someone starting college is to be involved and to not be afraid of putting yourself out there. College is a great opportunity and decision you’re taking, so make the best out of it!
