Inaugural Doctor of Nursing Practice Immersion Day

The NIU School of Nursing hosted its inaugural Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Immersion Day in September, bringing together more than 25 current DNP students.

Dr. Katherine Coulter

“The event allowed DNP students to collaborate with professionals from the DNP faculty as well as  other disciplines within the university,” said Katherine Coulter, assistant professor and director of Graduate Nursing Studies.

Held at the School of Nursing’s new home in the NIU Health, Wellness and Literacy Center, the event included presentations from the DNP faculty including Marcia Cooke, Tanya Tanzillo, Alyse Flury and  Mary Hintzsche who shared tips on formulating a DNP project, project proposals and project challenges.

Guest speakers also joined and presented including Betsy Sterner on NIU Library Resources, Lei Hua on  NIU Statistical Services, Ashley Bartelt on NIU Writing Center services, and Patty Wallace on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process.

“This event was important for students to network and develop skills in interprofessional communication and teamwork,” Coulter said. “These experiences are designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing DNP students to develop the expertise and competencies needed for advanced nursing roles.”
