National Mid-Career Award for Excellence

The Nutrition Education & Behavioral Science (NEBS) Research Interest Section of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) has named Henna Muzaffar, interim chair of the School of Health Studies and facilitator of the Certificate of Graduate Study in Eating Disorders and Obesity, as the recipient of its prestigious Mid-Career Award.

This national recognition honors outstanding investigators with 10 to 19 years of post-terminal degree experience who demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, mentorship and service. Professor Muzaffar was selected for her impactful work at the intersection of evidence-based nutrition education and inclusive, community-engaged practice.

“This award validates my years of dedication to advancing nutrition education, especially through community-focused and evidence-based approaches,” Muzaffar said. “It celebrates my commitment to mentoring students and junior researchers, which is a core part of my academic identity.”

Over the years, Muzaffar has established herself not only as a scholar and educator but also as a leader in professional service. She currently serves in key roles in several national organizations, including Communications Committee chair for the Nutrition Education for the Public Dietetics Practice Group, Sponsorship co-chair for the Research Dietetics Practice Group, and Awards Committee chair for the NEBS RIS.

“This award also acknowledges my leadership roles—not just in academia, but also in national professional organizations—highlighting my influence in shaping the field,” she added. “Lastly, it serves as a milestone that will inspire me to continue innovating and collaborating in nutrition science and education.”

Muzaffar emphasized that this recognition is not hers alone, but a reflection of the collaborative nature of her work.

This award is deeply meaningful to me as it reflects the collective efforts of my students, colleagues, and community partners who have supported and inspired my work,” she shared. “At the heart of my work is a commitment to empowering communities through evidence-based strategies that are both accessible and equitable. This award motivates me to continue building bridges between research, education and real-world impact.”
