Diana Garcia was recently featured on NIU.edu’s Huskie Spotlight. Here’s what she had to say:

Hometown: Cicero, IL

Major: Nutrition and Dietetics

What most excites you about your major?
I would say the food aspect. I love food; I love cooking it, I love eating it, and learning the background information. A lot of ingredients are good for reducing inflammation or aiding digestion, so it’s nice to know how everything works more at a micro level other than just looking at a delicious plate.

Who are your favorite professors and why?
My favorite professor would probably be Chef Bryan. He is the professor for FCNS 320 which is hospitality and nutrition course that’s mandated for both majors. When I took it, students form their own groups and menu, and we actually serve it at the Ellington’s restaurant. It was very interactive, and he’s super fun. He’s so awesome. He’s so relatable and personable. He really cares for his students and that really shows through his work.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned so far?
Everything happens for a reason and not everything has happened the way that I expected it to, but the end result favored me. It’s just about trial and error and not freaking out too much if something doesn’t work out one way or another.

What advice would you give future Huskies?
I would say to take advantage of the time you’re here. You really learn a lot as an individual. You kind of learn to adult, because you don’t have mom and dad here to cook for you, to do your chores, or anything. You really reflect on life and learn to become independent. I think that’s a good thing to be independent, so you know your value and you can do things on your own and not depend on anybody else.
